OSHA Requirements for Portable Toilets on Construction Sites

When it comes to running a construction site, safety and compliance go hand-in-hand. While hard hats and harnesses often take center stage, jobsite sanitation is just as important—and legally required.

So, what does OSHA require when it comes to portable restrooms on construction sites?

OSHA Rule: 1 Toilet Per 20 Workers

Under OSHA Standard 1926.51(c)(1):

  • Provide 1 toilet per 20 employees

  • For more than 200 workers: you’ll need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 employees

  • For 20 or fewer workers: 1 unit is generally sufficient

Toilets must be:

  • Easily accessible

  • Properly ventilated

  • Fully enclosed for privacy

Handwashing Is Required, Too

OSHA also mandates adequate handwashing facilities. If running water isn’t available, you’ll need to provide handwashing stations or hand sanitizer near the toilet area. This helps reduce the spread of germs and promotes a healthier, more professional jobsite.

Servicing & Sanitation Standards

OSHA requires all sanitation facilities to be maintained in a clean, sanitary condition. Most job sites benefit from weekly cleanings, but we offer more frequent service options for high-traffic sites or summer projects in the Tennessee heat.

The Risk of Non-Compliance

Failing to meet these requirements can lead to:

  • OSHA fines and citations

  • Worker complaints

  • Project delays or site shutdowns

Don’t let something preventable derail your build.
